Press for Cesspool
A few weeks back, I was talking with a promoter friend about how I had recently received a handful of press kits from bands that I wasn't familiar with that had absolutely no "hooks". Unfortunately, I don't think a 'selling point' for a band is moving to Brooklyn with the goal of sounding like Tom Petty, Vampire Weekend or [fill in the blank]. Kudos to Brooklyn band Cesspool as a press quote comparing the band to "the Violent Femmes with learning difficulties" was intriguing enough to make me want to give their six-song EP a listen and it was definitely worth the time. I'm not sure I hear the Violent Femmes in the band's EP but I do hear elements of John Cale (check out Cale's deconstruction of "Heartbreak Hotel" on the album June 1, 1974 as a point of comparison), Brian Eno, early Devo, Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa. Based on the 'The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo' style theatrical photos on the band's Facebook page, this looks like a band that should be a lot of fun to see live.
My Band is Better Than Your Band
Like the Violent Femmes with learning difficulties.
Wildly imaginative and totally entertaining... these songs are obviously too far out for the general public. But our guess is that the folks in this band don’t really give a damn. There is so much creativity going on here that it is, at times, totally overwhelming. 5 stars.
You could listen through 1,000 complete CDs and still hear nothing even remotely close to Cesspool... strangely beautiful.
These guys are obviously influenced by post-Faith No More Mike Patton, Beefheart, Zappa and whatever fucking drugs they can lay their hands on and / or the contents of all the bottles under the kitchen sink. If you ever wanted to know what it sounds like to be in the head of that old tramp you see in the mall shouting at trees then listen to Cesspool. Brilliant.
You will either love or despise this band... Cesspool is by far the most original and different band I have heard this year. Different is good and Cesspool is great!

Brilliant. Very, very enjoyable.

If you detest Frank Zappa, you should run away now! But if the Mothers and Captain Beefheart is your cup of tea, get ready to have your thirst quenched... Enjoy the insanity!
This is one strange record, from one strange band. Their music is, by their own definition, 'creepy, dickish, loud, complicated, catchy rock songs.' Fair dues. I likee.
Cesspool‘s unique brand of experimental punk boasts a tug-of-war between dissonance and melody, Rocky Horror flair, and a penchant for truly twisted takes on classic pop tropes.
